The Myth of the Deadbeat Dad

by Stephen Baskerville, PhD.

Following are notes from Stephen Baskerville, PhD., author of one of the strongest indictments of the Child Support Industry to date. Please read these notes, along with the article (using the link above) -- support the reform effort by also buying the magazine and sending copies of the article to your elected officials, as well as the editors of your local newspapers, radio and television stations.

The attached article is just published in the June issue of Liberty, a highly-respected libertarian magazine.

This is obviously a major breakthrough at a big magazine with a large and influential circulation. Also, for the first time my charges are documented with footnotes. While there is inevitably some repetition, this article contains new information on the federal role in child support enforcement, documented using government sources. (I wanted a stronger title: "The Hoax of the Deadbeat Dad." But now I can save that for the next piece.)

Liberty is available on larger newstands, such as Borders, B. Dalton, and Barnes & Noble bookstores.

We need to show editors and TV producers that this issue sells. Please buy this issue and send it to your local media and legislators. (Hard copy is better than email.) When you do, include a SHORT description of your own case, as a local variation on a national theme -- editors and producers (and politicians) like a local twist. If possible, take out a subscription to Liberty and say you are doing so because of this article (phone 800-854-6991 or go to www.libertysoft.com/liberty/orders.html.

(Your responses to my other recent articles have been reported back to me by the editors, every time. It makes a big difference.) Libertarians are proving to be some of our greatest allies, logically so, since this issue is a natural for them, and they should be encouraged. The "fatherhood crisis" is a classic case of the government creating a problem for itself to solve.

The PDF attachment shows the actual layout in the magazine. Once again, thanks to all those who sent information on lists and through other means.
