RETURN TO ANCPR RETURN TO STRIKE BACK INDEXSTRIKE BACK!! HOW TO FIGHT THE SYSTEM How to Read an SSN? An SSN has 3 parts, an Area Number, a Group Number and a Serial Number, respectively. So an SSN of 123-45-6789 has an Area Number of 123, Group Number of 45 and Serial Number of 6789. Area Numbers contain geographical information. Group Numbers indicate what year or how long ago a person received a SSN. The higher the number, the newer it is (e.g. 545-46-xxxx was issued in CA in 1951, and 545-53-xxxx was issued in 1978). Serial Numbers are issued consecutively and have no meaning (except the 2xxx and 7xxx explained below). Listed below are links that show valid number. Listed here are invalid numbers: Invalid Area Numbers: 700 Series (7xx-xx-xxxx) These numbers were assigned to railroad workers only through July 1, 1963 and have since been discontinued. 800 and 900 Series (8xx-xx-xxxx and 9xx-xx-xxxx) These numbers have never been used, except at one time for the Federal Witness Protection Program. Misc. Invalid Area Numbers 000 650 to 699 729 to 999 Invalid Group Numbers 00 (xxx-00-xxxx) Area Number 550, Group 19 (550-19-xxxx) Area Number 586, Groups 19, 29, 59 and 79-99) Any number not presently issued (too high, see above) Invalid Serial Numbers 0000 (xxx-xx-0000) Serial Numbers listed in the Death Master File Listing. Serial Numbers 2001-2999 and 7001-7999 One out of every 5 in this group are sampled and monitored by the SSA (Social Security Administration) for statistical research. I suppose if you want to have more fun with the government, you could create some wacky stats. When changing your SSN, always change your birthdate and place of birth. Consider re-creating yourself - you get to pick in which state you were living when your SSN was assigned and you get to pick the approximate time.
